Questi ruderi sono tutto ciò che resta della chiesa fortificata di San Giovanni in Palaçoli.

Eppure, ancora nel 1912, come ben documenta una straordinaria fotografia scattata dall’archeologo inglese Thomas Ashby, la facciata della struttura era ancora abbastanza integra.

Non è possibile stabilire se il crollo sia stato spontaneo o “provocato”, resta il fatto che tutt’intorno non vi è traccia del gran mucchio di massi che avrebbe dovuto esserci: non resta che pensare al riutilizzo dei materiali per altre opere.

These ruins are all that remain of the fortified church of San Giovanni in Palaçoli.

Yet, as late as 1912, as clearly documented by an extraordinary photograph taken by the English archaeologist Thomas Ashby, the facade of the structure was still relatively intact.

It is impossible to determine whether the collapse was spontaneous or “deliberate,” but the fact remains that there is no trace of the large pile of rubble that should have been scattered around: one can only assume that the materials were reused for other constructions.
