Libertà Square

Fino agli anni Venti del Novecento questa vera e propria bomboniera architettonica si chiamava Piazza del Comune, istituzione che fino a qualche anno prima aveva qui la sua sede. Nel 1922, un evento destinato a cambiare la storia d’Italia – la Marcia su Roma – “indusse” il consiglio comunale a ribattezzarla Piazza XXVIII Ottobre. Poi il vento della storia virò e, in assoluta antitesi con il precedente, ecco arrivare l’attuale si spera definitivo nome di Piazza della Libertà.

Prima che fosse realizzata la ben più ampia Piazza della Repubblica, fuori dalle mura del borgo, questa piazzetta rappresentava il cuore del paese, il luogo deputato a tutte le manifestazioni pubbliche.

Bella e ben fatta la pavimentazione, realizzata nel 1893-’94 con sanpietrini di travertino e cordonature in lastre di peperino.

Tra gli antichi edifici che si affacciano su questa suggestiva piazza, quattro sono di particolare interesse storico.

Until the 1920s, this charming architectural gem was known as Piazza del Comune, named after the municipal institution that had its headquarters here until a few years prior. In 1922, an event that would change the course of Italian history—the March on Rome—“prompted” the town council to rename it Piazza XXVIII Ottobre. Later, as the tides of history shifted once again, in direct contrast to the previous dedication, the square was given its current (and hopefully final) name: Piazza della Libertà.

Before the creation of the much larger Piazza della Repubblica, located outside the town walls, this small square was the heart of the village, the main site for all public events. The pavement, beautifully crafted in 1893-94, features travertine sanpietrini and peperino stone curbs.
